Feliz Natal, Clarinha!

moonsun

Dec 21, 2015.  Winter Solstice.

Carinha Clara.

Today, in the northern hemisphere, will be the shortest day of the year.  Fifteen years ago, I had been in Lisboa, trying to see you – of which story I will tell more in a later post here.   The day was, as is a winter solstice day, dark.  The days that follow grow steadily lighter, until summer’s solstice, when again, days grow shorter.  It is the rhythm of life on this earth.

Many cultures have celebrations at this time of year – celebrations of closure and re-birth.  Our’s is Christmas, tied to the religion which European society developed.  Elsewhere there are other holidays, with other names, but they all are sourced in the solstice.

Feliz Natal, Clara, however you celebrate it.

Amo-te,

Teu pai,

jon
